Every once in a while a book comes along that makes you fall in love with reading all over again. Don’t get me wrong I never fell out of love with reading, but sometimes it just becomes something I do. But this story it made me love, love reading. It was the absolute perfect story and one of my favorite books of 2015.

We met Josh in Where the Road Takes Me, I immediately fell in love with this single dad and couldn’t wait to read his story. Josh is a unique character. He was seventeen when he and his girlfriend had Tommy, and he gave up everything for them. Literally, everything, his family, dreams of being a professional skater, and his teenage life as he knew it.

What I really love about Josh is his complete selflessness. He did what every dad should do, but let’s be honest it’s remarkable because most don’t. He is just a regular guy who decided that being a good dad to his little boy was always going to be the most important thing he did. My love for Josh was pretty immediate and I didn’t know I could love him more until I saw him with Becca.

Becca is a beautiful girl, but is lost, broken and completely damaged. She moves in with her grandmother and her life immediately collides with Josh and Tommy’s. We don’t really get to see why Becca is the way she is, we just see that she is different. You know she has experienced some trauma, but you don’t really see the extent of it until later in the story. Regardless, Josh wasn’t interested in what was wrong with her. Josh is only interested in making her smile.

The connection between Becca and Josh was beautiful and I loved seeing them get to know each other. I loved seeing them both fill this need the other had. Now, I don’t even want to get started on Tommy. This little boy owned my heart and his connection with Becca…sigh, so freaking sweet.

Kick Push has the perfect amount of angst and drama, all the drama is necessary and the issues are things that need to resolved for the characters to grow. I never thought a scene wasn’t necessary or over the top, everything fit together perfectly! This story felt like real life, it was sometimes ugly, hard and trying, but always worth it.

Kick Push reminds you just how much of a difference you can make in someone’s life by just being a decent person. It shows you that you don’t have to be epic to have an epic life. This story reminded me to make every day count. To kick and push, so that you can enjoy the coast. I more than love this story, I more than love Josh, Tommy and Becca, and I more than need the epic conclusion!

To say I highly recommend this would be a gross understatement. This is the kind of story I hope everyone reads! Jay you had me at More Than, but your writing owned me in Kick Push.

Kick Push The Road Book 2 edition by Jay McLean Vanessa Bridges PREMA Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

My last review of a Jay McLean book came with a bit of a disclaimer...and I have to say DITTO on this one! (I may have said I was going to KILL Jay, but then promised it was all in jest. Sort of.) D

Wow. Just...wow! This honestly is probably the best Jay McLean book yet! (Although, More Than Forever holds a very special place in my heart.) The writing is phenomenal, the characters extremely relatable, and it will give you ALL. THE. FEELS.

A lot of people won't agree with me, but writing reviews for books that I LOVE, that CHANGE me, that make me GROW, are the hardest to write of all. And this one is no different. Not only is it hard to explain all of the emotional turmoil I felt while reading this book, but I also don't want to spoil ANYTHING for ANYONE, because you NEED to feel every moment of surprise, sorrow, joy, fear, lonliness, and laughter on your own terms.

I was already kind of in love with Josh from his secondary role in Where the Road Takes Me. But reading his story? And meeting Tommy in a 24/7 kind of way? Let's just say I am officially a #TommysMommyWannabe. I am SO in love with Josh Firetrucking Warden.

And Ms. Emerald Eyes? I just want to be her best friend. To hug her, and remind her how strong she is. And although I'm ridiculously jealous she gets to spend all sorts of time with Tommy and Josh, I would encourage her to be her best self, and to do what makes her happy, what makes her better, no matter what.

You MUST read this book! But know this this story will give you the book hangover of a LIFETIME!

I can't wait to see what happens next!

Your Not-So-Anonymous Book Junkie
I'm sitting here trying to find words to do Kick Push justice, words that will convey the sheer agonising beauty of this book, words that will convey the depth of emotion I experienced reading this, but none come close, there aren't enough superlatives possible to describe what I feel right now, fear, pain, beauty, awe, joy, sorrow, excitement, LOVE ... none of them can truly capture the visceral response I'm living, because this book stole my heart within the first page, captured my soul in the first chapter, Kick Push was every thing I hoped for and so, so much more.

Josh Warden grabbed my attention in Where The Road Takes Me, he was strong, steadfast, fun and full of life and yet had this inherent sadness that always hovered somewhere just beyond reach, I knew with absolute certainty that he would the kind of character that would leave footprints on your heart, like Chloe he would change the way you look at the world, he would steal a piece of your heart and never give it back, and by God did he steal it, and the truth is I don't want it back, because getting it back means letting go, and I don't think I'll ever want to say good bye to this book, to these people, this family,

Becca Owens hides painful past behind her silent smile, her world has become a black void where she struggles to make it through each day, with no connection to anyone she's able to sink further into the darkness that surrounds her, until Josh and his son Tommy show her a reason to breath, a reason to smile, a way to coast.

There is a beautiful fragility to both Becca and Josh, one of them broken and the other bent, two people struggling at times just to breathe through the all consuming darkness, to put one foot in front of the other, to keep going day after day, they witness something in the other that makes the journey that little bit easier. McLean shows her growth here, roaming from laugh out loud funny to heart breaking, to joyous to the depths of despair, and you feel EVERY. SINGLE. moment of this breath taking story about two people and the family they create.

"You deserve for someone to look at you the way I have and love you the way I do. You deserve all of it."

And there's the sheer beauty of Kick Push, because don't we all deserve that, we deserve to love and be loved in return, we deserve to find someone we can just coast with, we are more than what we are told by those who want to hurt us and bring us down, we're more than what we allow ourselves to believe in the darkest moments, we aren't broken, sometimes we need a metaphorical band aid, and sometimes we need to be reminded we just need to kick, and then push.

Some books allow you to forget your troubles for a moment, some make you laugh, some tear your soul apart, some allow you to see the world around you differently, some make colours brighter, and moments stronger, some leave you reeling and some break your heart apart only to piece it back together, never quite the same as it was before. Kick Push did all of this and so much more, but more than any of this, Kick Push reminded me why I love to read, it challenged me, it forced me out of my comfort zone at times, it left me breathless and wanting, and for that I will always be grateful to the author. A good book will feel like time has no value, that hours slip away like minutes, but a great book will leave you feeling spent and sated, it will leave you feeling like you've experienced every moment, it will feel real, it will make you forget you were even reading in the first place.

Kick Push wasn't a book, it wasn't a story, it was real, and it was one of the most breath taking experiences of my life, and now as I sit here trying to formulate something to tell you how much this story meant to me, the best I can do is to tell you to BUY KICK PUSH, read it, experience it, let the words wash over you, let every nuance seep into your veins and breathe new life into your soul. For the fifth time since creating Glass Paper Ink I am awarding the PLATINUM LIPSTICK, I am awed by this story, by Josh and Becca, by Tommy, by Jay McLean's words.
