The king is dead! Long live the king!
David Birkenhead never expected that his adopted brother James would have the throne handed to him on a silver platter. But even David, veteran of some of the most brutal and merciless battles ever fought, is shocked at the layers upon layers of intrigue and double-dealing that he finds upon his return to the capital world. Warfare, David has learned, is a despicable waste of lives and resources. Yet… Might politics be even worse?
James must be crowned, or all the progress that has recently been made towards a peaceful, just universe will be cast away and lost forever. In warfare, the ends can and quite often do justify the means. Can the same be said of politics?
And when it's all over and done, will David ever be able to look himself in the mirror again?

This book was quite a downturn from the other books in this series. The book blurb of course hinted that I would not be so happy with this one and it was at least as bad as I suspected. The reason for me being unhappy with this book is that the entire book is devoted to politics of the worst kind. It’s all talk talk, deception, treason, backstabbing and general political bs. If I wanted that junk I could just read an excerpt from one of the European Community meetings or something. The only positive bit was that the schemers and plotters didn’t get what they wanted in the end unlike the European Community a..holes who gets to drone on and on spending our tax-money and making our lives expensive and miserable. If you like the political stuff you’ll probably find this book to be a good one. It’s written in the same style as the others and there’s nothing really wrong about it except the choice of subject matter for the story. Me, well as you might have noticed from the somewhat rude choice of words above I distinctly dislike politics, both the imagined and the real one.
Well, at least there was a hint at the end that things would make a turn for the better at the end of the book, which is more than one can say about the European Union but that’s why I read books anyway, to escape reality for a few hours.

Captain The David Birkenhead Series Book 5 eBook Phil Geusz Reviews
By this time in the series, the main characters are fairly well developed, but hte main plot threads clearly still need to be resolved. This story doesn't finish off much in the way of hte plot, but it does take the story and move it forward, bringing the story toward the inevitable climax and hinting at the larger battles to come.
It's a good read, if not as tense as the earlier books where David is fighting to save everyone on Zombie Station. Start with Ship's Boy, but expect to pick this up as you work your way through the series
I read this latest installment in a single sitting. Despite my misgivings about the choice of gengineered rabbits as a vehicle for comment on slavery, I have to say that this time I was fully drawn in. The novel is indeed short, but so tightly paced that I did not feel at all cheated. The fact that all of the action was political rather than military this time round was, to me, only further proof of the development of the main characters and a realistic and totally believable demonstration of the old dictum that war is the continuation of diplomacy by other means. Excellent and indeed, for the price, unbelievable. My compliments to the author. Wonderful stuff.
At first I was a little hesitant about continuing to read this series. The writing is a little simplistic but by the second book I was hooked. This is a very entertaining read. The story is very well laid out with great character development. The storyline does have a certain fairy tale quality to it but the author has done an excellent job of making it work. I would give this book and the whole series six stars if I could. My only concern is that there are seven books in the series of which six are very thin volumes. The whole story could have been published in three regular sized books.
Once again, a very good story. However, I do have a problem with this book. I feel that Mr. Guesz was unfair when he talked about the Black American Hero's that have lived and fought and died in many wars that have been fought by this country. If you just take into account The Tussquee Airman and how bravely they fought, and how many Bombers they were able to safely escort during World War two. Despite all the racial prejudice they had to put up with. And that is only one example. I feel that what was said about them (African Americans) was unfair. However, I will continue to read this series. I hope that you will speak better of your fellow Americans in the future.
Not great fiction, but very readable. Hey, I read them all. Not to give away anything important, but the protagonist is a "rabbit" whose race was created to serve as human servants and laborers. No details are given about exactly what was done, but the "rabbits" resemble human/rabbit hybrids. It's an interesting concept.
Throughout the series David B. struggles to prove that "rabbits" are really human, inspite of how they look.
Writing was fine, if far-fetched in the ingenuity of the hero.
I did get a little put off by the hugging and crying behaviors, though the author attributed it to his real rabbit inherited traits.
If you have time to kill it is easy reading and quick paced.
Book 5, Captain, moves David Birkenhead from the space fighting arena to the political arena. I don't think he went into space once during this book, and the lack of on-the-edge zing reflects the change. Yes, the military strategy needed to pull off the change in King comes REALLY CLOSE (hence the four stars), but isn't quite there.
Political belief discussion between characters at the beginning - I do not assume it is the author's beliefs, but does reflect the beliefs of those growing up in the Monarchy system. According to the studies done in this Democratic/Republic system, the information the characters understand is wrong - but we may be bias as well. Could lead to interesting discussions on best government forms for a book club. For slaves, a monarch system would be comfortable.
Phil Geusz is one of my favorite science fiction authors, specifically his transformation stories. I am not a big fan of the military science fiction. But Phil Geusz had me on the edge of my chair with each of his books in the 'The David Birkenhead Series'. The character development was stunning, the plots (and sub plots) were well paces and engaging. Upon reflecting on the entire series, I find myself thinking it hard to believe. But to Phil Geusz credit he tells the story so well that you loose yourself and the plot really does became real while reading. But the real strength of the series is the way Phil Geusz used the story to deal with discrimination, social decay, personal responsibility, loyalty, and other human-condition topics. Several of the books where so engaging, I stayed up until the early morning hours to see how they would end. I would recommend this to anyone who reads. It has something for everyone.
