AAAAAAH MY FEELINGS ARE SO MIXED UP HOW CAN I EVER DECIDE ON THE RATING OR WHAT TO WRITE IN THIS REVIEW OR ANYTHING?!?!?!

I guess I’ll just go with 4 stars. I mean, in some ways it’s a five star book, but in others it’s a three, so … there you go.

Okay, let’s see … rushed ending. No epilogue (what the what? How do I know if? … and if? … etc.) The rest of the story was pretty good.

The content is probably not best for younger teens. In fact, I’d maybe say “PG-13” would be a good rating for this book because of sexual content. However, it wasn’t the kind of sexual content that bugs me a lot. I know that sounds weird and not very godly … but what I mean is, they didn’t describe kisses or anything else in detail. In fact, they didn’t really describe it at all.

But … guys, it’s the Elizabethan era. If you’ve studied it, it’s just so immoral! Sex was used as a tool to manipulate people. Virgin Queen. *quiet laughter* So yeah. I was prepared for that, though, and wasn’t too surprised. I think it was handle relatively tastefully while still staying true to the era.

Anyway, the historical research seemed pretty impeccable to me. I really got immersed in the era. I just finished studying it for school, actually.🙂

So. Loved the characters. Although they were so stubborn. Usually their back-and-forth-ness didn’t last too long, though.

Overall, I will read it again, but probably not for a while. It’s a lot to take in! It got me so emotional! I should have listened to Lady D’Winter. “There can be no love in court except for the Queen.”

A Constant Heart Siri Mitchell 9780764204319 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed the historical elements of this book. I have taught aspects of Elizabethan England to my middle school students, so knew about the architecture-- "E" shaped homes, the lead paint that was killing women, the ruff, the Queen having to give permission to marry, travel, etc., and about the amount of money spent on frivolous things. I also knew of the plague, and how people fled London to escape it, and how the poor would beg, although they needed a license to beg, and about the different theatres--Shakespeare vs. Marlowe. This book really portrayed those realities of life.

I also liked how the book was divided into Marget's thoughts and Lord Lytham's thoughts. It really was heartbreaking reading about Marget's miscarriages, her babies' deaths, and how all she did was love Lytham, and just wanted his love in return.

Since the book also gave Lytham's point of view, it was interesting to read how he really wanted to be with Marget, but how he was supposed to be a courtier first and foremost.

The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is due to the editing. Words were thrown into sentences that made no sense. Paragraphs were repeated--I read them first at the end of one chapter, and then the sentence would just end. I'd start the next chapter, and there were the same paragraphs again, along with the rest of the chapter. Also, sometimes there was no break between Marget's point of view and Lytham's. So I had to go back and reread to figure out who was doing the talking.

Honestly, if not for those editing issues, I would recommend my students to read this book to have a better understanding about what life was like during that time period.

If there is an edited update to this book, which I highly doubt will happen since it was published so long ago, but if there happens to be one, I would change my rating to a 5.
I waited to read this because of the reviews, but they should not have kept me away. I should have known. This is Siri Mitchell after all.

Not a light, fun, easy read, but smart, honest and intriguing. I confess that Siri Mitchell is one of my very favorite authors. She has guts. She dares to write about hard stuff. She dares to not sugar coat it. She dares to go all literary on us! So, if you aren't in the mood to think or feel, don't read this. But, if you are in the mood for honesty, for layers of meaning and for smart writing, this is the book, and the author, for you.

Woman in particular don't like this book. A woman is put through some pretty tough stuff. And all through it she is only trying to please and is the innocent. Her only crime really is ignorance, which is not even her fault.

Now, at the risk of spoiling the whole thing without giving anything away, let me explain to you why this book is so beautiful. Grace. Undeserved grace. This man will stop at almost nothing to *earn* the attention of the queen so he can be *granted* what he believes he wants and deserves and is rightfully his. Even marry someone he has never seen. His bride only wants him to love her and only wants to please him and help him. She will do almost anything to earn his love and favor. And he is bent on despising her. Even after he "claims his marital rights" without so much as a kind thought in his angry head. This is only one of the hard parts. And then as a couple that isn't even a couple, All their efforts to earn favor to gain the status the believe they deserve and are entitled to only cause more trouble taking them further and further from their goals. Finally, they just give up. And that is where the grace comes in. But I guess you will have to read it to understand what I am talking about.

Mitchell takes the salvation theme and weaves it into a beautiful story. We can do nothing on our own to earn God's favor. We can try and try to please Him, but that gets us nowhere really, except tired and discouraged. We must rely on Him and his Grace. When we get to that point of giving up and begging for what we now know we do not deserve, favor and salvation, we realize that is all we wanted in the first place. Such a beautiful thing. And beautifully woven into this story.
